My Baachan 32. Self-Support Camps

Baachan_030.jpg

A small proportion of Nikkei who had the wherewithal and motivation moved to ghost towns and other spaces where they could keep their families together with a little more independence. The other relocation camps also ended up using a families resources as the Custodian of Enemy Property sold off what they were supposed to be keeping safe.

My mother's family moved to a self-supporting site at Minto, near Lilloet, because they just had a baby and wanted to stay together. This drawing is based on a photograph from Minto (NNM 2010.23.2.4.564) from around 1944 (not my mother's family). Minto is now under a lake as part of a hydro project.
