#MyBaachan 38. Go East

Baachan_036.jpg

While stuck in the relocation camp, my Baachan and all the other people of Japanese descent forcibly removed from their homes were given a “choice” between a rock and hard place, of moving East of the Rockies or to Japan. Going to Japan was called “Repatriation” even though for many of the Nisei, the second generation, it was a foreign country. My Baachan and her family decided to go East (but not the Far East). They were required to have something arranged in advance. They signed a contract to work on a farm in southern Ontario and travelled across the country in the cheapest seats on the train, not much different from hobos.
