Conscientious Objections by Neil Postman
This collection of writings is now “old” but still so intriguing. He was so concerned about the demise of civilization because of television and visual culture. His concerns seem quite justified. I suppose Youtube would make him even more crazy. He said Huxley’s dystopian Brave New World was more accurate in reflecting modern society in the way pleasure drives us to distraction. His graduation speech summarized his hope that more people might be Athenians, interested in rational thought, learning for its own sake, and improving society, rather than Visigoths, self-absorbed and ignorant. Oh well.
