Mosquitoes in the London Underground

On an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World they talked about evolution. They included an interesting segment on mosquitoes and disease transmission, I guess to put it in the context of “saving the world.” Mosquitoes have been responsible for the deaths of about half of all the people who ever lived. They talked about mosquitoes that have evolved in the London Underground, possibly even as a separate species. They were first noticed when people lived in the tunnels during World War II, though they weren’t studied until recently. Mosquitoes can reproduce in two weeks, so they can evolve quickly.
